as I always go get the vase at too low a level to conveniently fight them. I just always use an invisibility scroll. You can wait to cast it until you're inside because they're friendly until you pass the doors they guard. Save the game OUTSIDE, however, before you cast, because sometimes they're in an impossible configuration to get past and you have to leave the house and re-enter to get them to change in numbers and location. Conduct your legitimate business with Markham, then cast invisibility and steal the vase (you can just pick it up; "stealing" it had no beneficial effect - it still set the trap off). If you end up bumping into a guard, reload from your save (outside) and try again. From experience, this takes much less (real) time than whacking away at the guards unless you wait until very late in the game to do this quest.
