Sometimes it took until the third or fourth character before it would lock up. Sometimes it did it on the first try. But it always did it in the Pit by the fourth character, at least (when trying successively). It happened when I tried to look at what each character had after the promotion. So I would click on one, then the next, then the next, and lock. I haven't tried just opening one person's inventory and then walking around awhile before opening another. I tend to look at everyone's while I'm looking.
