I had this same problem. Crashed in any shop (including inns) if I entered any sub-menu (skills, buy/sell) whether I hit the close button or the key. The Judge's dialogue on Emerald Island also caused a crash.

Solution?

I changed from Software 3D to Hardware 3D.

I am using Mok's patch, of course.

Works like a charm now. I tried to crash it again and I couldn't :-)
