Let me tell you a story. A long time ago, there was a company called New World Computing, that marketed a game that was to become the first in a series. The third game in that series became renowned as quite simply one of the best CRPG games ever written. The guy mainly responsible took his success very seriously and went on to try and improve the games, and the ones following were also very successful. Eventually New World Computing was sold to another company, and the sixth game in the series was put out by them. However, by the time the sixth one was made, there were computer games shops in places like Bangkok and Moscow stocking nothing but pirated copies of this and other games. The makers didn't get a penny from any of these, so none of the money that people paid for them went to the people who had worked very hard to design those games. The company eventually fell on hard times, and the revenue lost - let's not mince words, not lost, stolen - because of game piracy was undoubtedly one of the factors that forced it into bankruptcy. And nobody was making the games we loved any more. The company that went bankrupt was 3DO, and the game that we lost was Might and Magic. That is why we hate game pirates and piracy. And if you or anyone else thinks that killing the goose that laid the golden egg is a good idea, then you need your head testing. |
