The first thing to do is to check and see what version of the game you've got. If it's the initial issue, you need to apply the additional patch (from the ftp site, below) to get rid of the Soul Jar/Lich Jar bug. Be aware also that this patch only cures things if the bug has not hit you. If you've already been hit, you only options are either to revert to a backup saved game before the bug hit, or use and editor (St0rmcat's MM7 view is the one I used) to edit the Lich Jars in. You then need to apply Mok's patch (follow the link from:
http://telp.org/mm7/tavern/anyboard/posts/19648.html )
to make the game compatible with XP. This works in >95% of all cases. If you're one of the unlucky ones where it still doesn't work, get back to us.
