I also understood that you could go and get the soul jars any time you liked, provided that you did not complete the quest by delivering them to Sir Caneghem (Light Path) or Maximus (Dark Path). In other words, it's handing over the Soul Jars that causes the bug to strike, not finding them. Does this help?
