You get the membership in the Light or Dark Guild after completing the initial quest (Walls of Mists, Breeding Zone)and reporting at the questgiver but it does not mean that you can learn the skill. The only effect of the membership is that they won't kick you out of the guild immediately.
You must finish your 2nd promotion if you want to learn the skill (Priest of Light, Lich, and so on). This also concerns archers and paladins(?), who can reach only the base level of the skill - but only after the 2nd promotion.
