IIRC you cannot learn Light or Dark Magic until you have met with Gavin Magnus (light) in Castle Lambent or Archibald (Dark) in the Pit. When you have accomplished either one of these, then you are automatically enrolled in the appropriate Guild where your party members (if eligible) can purchase the skill. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here. It's been a while since I plaed the game.
