Any graphics problems are much more likely to be caused by bad drivers. The only noteable problem with DirectX is the ocassional need to re-initialize DirectDraw and Direct3D. Problems with versions of DX which are not the latest versions of their generation are almost exclusively related to conflicts with specific hardware.
