I vary my gameplay style at whim, to make different sorts of games. For a very low-level party, killing the trees can be pretty lucrative, if you allow yourself to Mephisto their corpses/stumps for good gems. And they're the only targets that you can consistently hit from a distance in real time combat, as you run around avoiding their attacks. That's another bonus for a low-level party, and is kinda fun.
