Actually, the Bridge Switch (on the South pillar) never works the elevator. However, when you hit the Elevator Switch on the North pillar, it retracts all currently extended bridges in addition to operating the elevator. I just went back to the game to look for a pattern. Can't find any. Tried it with toggling the switch by space bar and by mouse pointer. Tried 'resetting' by hitting the Elevator switch. Nuthin'. Nada. Not a Sausage. No pattern. Completely random as far as I can see. I don't know, maybe I need to have my party stand in the middle of the elevator platform and let themselves get hit by the Fireballs to get a pattern.
