Well, IMO one of the worst places in the pit is just inside the entrance, it is usually a good idea to be invisible when you enter. Set an LB in the hall of the pit and go for the DI spell book the first visit. Then get the archmage and priest of light promotions. You should probably get the ranger lord promotion too. For the second visit I usually try to sneak past the enemies and set a LB in the tunnel towards the first teleporter, in the "green zone", from there you don't get attacked from three directions when you step out. Then, if you use the spells turn undead, mass fear and paralyze together with regeneration and the occasional power cure you shouldn't have too much trouble with it. The turn undead spell is why I suspect it is a good idea for your ranger to get her/his second promotion first.
