Learning is only really good at about the time you chose light or dark and should any be brought up before that at a slow rate.

I do not believe that shrapmetal is as good as people say. I do not think any magic needs to go over fifteen, and a spell caster should keep all schools fairly even for the cases when creatures are immune to some.

All skills that inhance melee combat should be Maxed, except Unarmed and Dodging. Only the monk should even learn these skills, as he is the only one who can use them to any effect.
