From the sound of it, my fix won't help you. When your game installed, and selected hardware acceleration, it would have set that value to "1" from the start. (It may have become zero when you switched to software mode.) You don't need to force the game to try using hardware acceleration; it's already trying in your case (and somehow failing).

My only solution to Windows XP compatibility issues is to not install Windows XP. So you're probably better off listening to somebody else. :-)

But also, it doesn't hurt to try. With any computer, the strangest things can fix the strangest, seemingly unrelated problems, sometimes only on the third time you try doing the same exact thing you did the first two times. So go ahead, change whatever you'd like to change, and just keep a written record so you'll know what to change back.
