Paulus gave me the following suggestion: change the shortcut to point to the MM7.exe instead of the configuration utility (MM7setup.exe).

It worked for me.

Another suggestion that various people gave me was to uninstall, create a new user account in XP, and then reinstall under the new user account. That fixed some problems I was having with MM8.
