Medusa, I hate you!
10/12/2019, 12:19:44

    The Elf writes:

So I had quit playing for a month, unable to conquer those mobs and hordes of werewolves and wolfmen in Blackshire. (I was more interested in their hoards than in their hordes.) But when I gritted my teeth and dug in, I was finally able to defeat them, and get out of there without getting hopelessly lost in the maze that is the Lair of the Wolf. So then I thought, "Gee, that wasn't so bad. Now let's find the woman's husband who is lost in that dungeon near the Baa Temple. . . ."
Unfortunately, I forgot that it was advisable to sneak past the Gold Dragon, instead of challenging him. (My nether regions are consistently handed back to me on a silver platter.)

Now a question for you vanilla players: I seem to recall Bones telling me years ago that the Autosave feature kicked in every time you entered a different map or went from outside to inside. Is this a false memory, or is it supposed to work that way? Because it certainly is NOT true in the Steam version.

It's true for the disc version

And it works very well in my game. It's saved my nether regions a time or three . . .

I never attempt the Temple of the Snake until I'm fairly sure I can take the gold dragon out. After I've killed it, I have great fun mephistoing the carcass until I get something really useful – like Guinevere or Morgan. This last game, in the process of doing that, I was presented with three bows, 1 of the Dragon, 1 of Darkness, and 1 of Carnage.

Also, in my most recent game, I didn't try tackling the Lair of the Wolf until I had GM in Dark with 10+ skill points and Shrapmetal to go with it. Ever so much easier! With that and the three bows, the host of wolfkin around the leader didn't last all that long; a fair number didn't get anywhere near me.

Mephistoing?
10/14/2019, 12:29:02

    The Elf writes:

Is Mephistoing like what Finland's Crazy Bear accused me of years ago: "Elf shops for spells like she does for shoes in RL: keep trying them on (via save-reload) until she finds a pair to her liking."?

At the time I tried Temple of the Snake I was at level 42. I gave up on it until a later time, and flew over to Gharik's Forge. It gave me a lot of grief, but I managed to get across that final bridge--and immediately ran into a game-stopper. The door to the Forge itself wouldn't budge. (And of course, without retrieving the Hourglass, I couldn't finish the game.) I hunted and searched everywhere for a button, pressure plate, or other switching device to open that door, to no avail. I gave up and went back to Free Haven to try to find some spells that were elusive (it's very difficult to find TWO copies of "Cure Insanity," for example.) I accomplished this, and went back to Gharik's to try once more. By then I was level 45. I searched up and down: and there, right beside the $%*&@!! door was a red lever for opening the door! (The lever wasn't as red as my face.)

So now today I'll go in and "fight Foozle," as Scorpia of the late, lamented "Computer Gaming World" used to say. (For those of you who are "new" to M&M, having not played the first three games, or for those who were puzzled by MM3, yes, the villainess Scorpia was very definitely named for the RPG hint writer of the magazine.)

That's right.

Mephisto was the player who gave his name to multilooting. I don't know if he was the first to use it – I suspect not – but he was the one who popularised it and those who later used the technique named it after him. It was a long time ago, though.

Gharik's Forge. Yes. I remember when I first found that place, and assumed that it was easy because it was in New Sorpigal. Oops! Reload time . . . I reached the first bridge, but that was as far as I got. Nowadays, I know better! Additionally nowadays, I always maintain a Lloyds Beacon in the first room after my party passes the door opened by the Gharik's Forge key – just in case.

LOL Yes, I remember him, now that you mention it.

I'd actually say that it is advisable to kill the Gold Dragon...

In the confined area of the corridor, I found it very easy to beat the dragon "around a corner". (You know what I mean: some part of the sprite is visible, so you hit it in melee, but its shots are wasted against the wall.) The only problem are those traps that will repeatedly hit you while fighting, so you must be strong enough to be able to take that (but I think that at level 42, you should be).

All in all, this must surely be the easiest dragon to kill in whole of MM6.

Actually, I think old Longfang Witherhide was MUCH easier.

Longfang Witherhide (Kinda spoilerish)

I don't think Mephistoing Longfang would yield anything --- only thing I've ever gotten off him is his claw, which is needed for the Hero promotion. Sure, you also get a small amount of gold, but really nothing otherwise remarkable from him.
