Two questions:

    The Elf writes:

    1. I assume that "Notorious" plus skill level 12 is required for Dark Magic mastery. Is there any way to gain this rep without using Armageddon? I've donated and donated to whatever Temple of Baa I'm using at the time, but never seem to get beyond "Vile." I've got 3 members at level 12, but am having to wait to gain Mastery, because they're too weak to survive the Titans. (And my arthritic fingers won't allow a quick race in, get the promotion, then quickly teleport out.)

    2. Is the Shadow Guild Hideout in the Frozen Highlands one of those horrid things where if you make even one mistake, you have to start the whole thing over? Specifically, I know you have to step on every "safe" tile to trigger the teleporter, but does stepping on even one trapped tile mean you have to start over in the maze? If so, I can't think of any treasure worth all the trouble.

Oh, that "assume!"

Since I BELIEVE that this is a family-friendly website, I'll pass on the "assume" bit. (Frankly, I had never heard the meme until 1981, when my company sent me to their training school. I led a rather sheltered life until I went to work.)

Now, it's clear I have no idea about how to get to Notorious the goody-two-shoes way... sorry (no I'm not really *grin*)
But if memory serves me right, I believe a Notorious reputation and Expert skill level are the only requirements for Dark Magic Mastery

That's right. A "Notorious" rep, 4 skill points, and Expert are the only qualifications needed for Mastery in Dark Magic

    Peter2 writes:

Similarly, a "Saintly" rep, 4 skill points and expertise will get you Mastery in Light Magic. The main problem I had getting to Light Magic Master, playing the v1.0 game, was finding my way to Eel-Infested Waters. There's only one ship a week, and I had the devil's own job working out where it left from, and when.

I'm told it became a lot easier with later versions of the game.

Whoa! I've been misssing out.

    The Elf writes:

All my eligible Mirror-path characters are expert in both Light and Dark. One is missing level 12 in Dark, another in Light. I've been donating like mad to the Temple, but no reaction so far. So two more questions:

    1. Which counts for more: the amount of money donated, or the number of times you donate? In other words, does donating 20 times at 2gp count the same as once at 40gp?

    2. If the number of donations counts more, does it require separate visits? Should I pay all at once, or pay, run back out, pay again, repeat ad infinitum?

Peter2, as far as I know, the only ship to N. Alamos sails from Silver Cove on Wednesdays. Even so, you have to walk or fly from there to the island that contains the trainer's house. (This from a hand-drawn map from c. 1998.)

Some answers
08/22/2019, 12:45:15

    Peter2 writes:

1 & 2. That doesn't apply in my game. There's just the word "Donate", and if you click on it, there's the "money transfer" sound. Nowhere is there any way to control how much you give. But I'm pretty sure that different temples take different amounts, and if you donate often enough the party is endowed with different benefits.

    3. You and I must have different versions of the game. I know mine is the unmodified v1.0, and the only ship to EIW leaves from the dock on the island north of Silver Cove town on a Thursday – IIRC it's called "Barracuda". I can't remember off-hand which island in EIW it docks at, though.

Peter2, you're absolutely right. . .

    The Elf writes:

. . .the Barracuda does leave from the island north of Silver Cove and go to the south island. However, the Cerulean Skies does leave from Silver Cove itself and go to the north island. I think I went that way because I assumed (that word again!) that the instructor was somewhere near the castle. And, ass that I was, I had to fly (much safer than water walking past the sea monsters!) to get to the island where he actually was.

    P. S. Yes, I had v1.0, but (regrettably) gave it to my sister when I got the 3DO/Ubisoft bundle. "Regrettably," because she had her house burglarized a few years later, and the thieves took all her game CD's(!) I don't know what version the bundle is.

    P. P. S. I also think that the NWC Headquarters is a sly revenge of the game developers for JVC's and Trip Hawkins' "selling out." Else why the two goblins?

Ah – there is the difference.
08/24/2019, 10:07:24

    Peter2 writes:

In my game, as in yours, the Cerulean Skies does leave from Silver Cove (on a Wednesday?) The difference is that in your game, it goes to North Island in E1, Eel Infested Waters. It also goes to a North Island in my game, but it's the one in D1, just north of Silver Cove Town. The journey takes one day, and it leaves you ready to turn around and board the Barracuda to go to E1.

Hmmm. I wonder if. . .

    The Elf writes:

. . . my REAL original game worked that way, too? I'll never know. I don't remember ever getting to Master level in Light Magic, and I know I never dabbled in Dark.

From your description, I know I must have drawn the maps when I got the Ubisoft bundle, since I carefully noted the various ships' schedules and itineraries on each map. (Same with stables.) Can't remember the year.

beg & threaten peasants

First step: donate at a Baa temple to get down to vile. Second step: find peasants who do not want to talk to you and keep pestering them. That gets you down to one or two steps above notorious. Third step: Hire one or two burglars (or other cheap evil guys or girls) and visit the master of dark with them.
