    In my 20 years or so of playing this game, I have never ever generated an object of such quality from the Enchant Item spell. The best one I remember from the past was a Helm of Mana. So there it is. The Enchant Item spell CAN generate high quality stuff. But from my experience, it's such a vanishingly rare occurrence that I'll probably die before it happens to me again!

    For your interest, I was playing the v1.0 game installed from a copy of the MM6 Limited Edition that I bought new in 1998 on a bog-standard Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 laptop of roughly the same vintage, running under Windows 98.

We know your V1.0 has different boat days to EIW so maybe I’ll do a little testing of my V1.0 version to see if these differences show up.

A lot of work was done in the old days to test if time or place affected the result of the Enchant Item spell.

    Late afternoon certainly isn't something I've ever remembered as being particularly important. Maybe time of the week/month?

    Getting that Titanic Trident of the Dragon blew my conclusion right out of the water, though, and I'm now working with the tentative hypothesis that Enchant Item gives goodies according to some abstruse probability calculation. This will be hard-coded into the game engine, and I don't have the skills to work out what it is.

    This was immediately followed by Portalling back to New Sorpigal, donating a few times to the Temple there (reputation shot back up from Notorious to Respectable), and going to make my long-postponed visit to the Lair of the Wolf to do all the quests in there, converting the werewolves to "waswolves" in the process. I then popped over to Silver Cove to deliver suitable admonishment to Cedric Druthers and his coterie of corrupt druids (and their friends) in the Monolith. After that, I checked on the health of my party (Shift-Z) and greatly to my surprise, my reputation was back up at Saintly.

    I do not remember ever playing an MM6 game in which my party has achieved a Saintly rep after acquiring mastery in Dark Magic.

    Since there appear to only be 4 negative karma quests there are many ways to get from Respectable(200+) back to Saintly(1000+). Doing it after receiving magic from Archibald would take some planning.
