NWC Headquarters?
08/08/2019, 12:06:32

    The Elf Herself writes:

Just curious: how many of you visit the NWC Headquarters, off in Dragonsand, or wherever? Does visiting it count as cheating, or is it "an unpublished feature?" If you go, do you have all your members touch the little obelisk?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

But it has been said, by I don't remember who but it was someone affiliated with NWC (not JVC himself tho), it was actually put in to give beginning parties a leg up... and it definitely does just that.

For beginning parties?

How on earth do they survive? I never go until I'm at least level 10, and have the Fly skill. (Use the scroll, go to the entry point, have all your crew slain by the dragons, oops! one two many times.)

Okay, but then what? *Spoiler*

    The Elf Herself writes:

I tried it with a brand-new party, level 1, no experience except for The Letter. We got the Fly scroll, saved the game, then flew to the Shrine of the Gods. We managed to get everybody's stats raised on the obelisk, and escape into NWC Headquarters without being killed. (This took nearly an hour, real-time, since dragon population and placement is highly random.) Whee! Free money! (But only up to 10,000 gold.) Free armor! Well, some anyway. Lots of potion bottles, some potions after we got some of the money. We killed both Trip and Jon, for some added experience, got some free food (until we were poisoned, which we had to cure with a purple potion, since nobody had much skill beyond First Aid and Bless.)

So-o-o-o, how do we get back? At level 1, we of course have never even heard of either Town Portal or Lloyd's Beacon. Is there some magic spot that returns you to New Sorpigal when you touch it? (I finally forfeited the 10,000 gold pieces, got killed by the dragons, and resurrected back in New Sorpigal. Since we were dead(?) broke, we made use of the "money well" outside the Inn. The 100 gold it produced was just enough to let us level up at the training center. After that, we'll have to kill some goblins for some ready cash.)

Do you use turn-based mode?

Yes, that's the only way I was able to survive!

Previously, I'd have one person touch the pillar, run into the headquarters until I could heal everyone, go back and let another person touch it, etc., until everyone had their chance. By then practically everyone was at death's door, so it took a considerable amount of healing. I know I used to get back to New Sorpigal without the Beacon or Portal, but I can't remember how. In fact, I don't even remember exactly where you touch inside the Shrine to get inside NWC. (And it was from some long-ago TELPer that I even learned about NWC. I never found it on my own. Peter2 taught me about the suit of armor in Goblinwatch. Fruit Fly and Ribannah, I believe, were the ones who knew all about the tree-Easter eggs in MM8. I think it was Ribannah who even posted all their co-ordinates!)

I keep coming back to Peter2's desire to be able to restart mm6 (and other games) without knowing anything....

There are so many ways to play this game. I prefer character development before quests (as seen in link in test post below). It is possible to run around as level 1's (w/ a little flying) and lock in 66 horseshoes on the ground, 52 outside stables by 13Jan. There're so many little tricks and going to Dragonsands is a great place to learn some of them. Rather then spend a lot of time exchanging posts here I recommend that since we're in same time zone, click ragwort above and drop me an email w/ your address. I'll send you my phone number. A few phone calls will get info and ideas across faster. A few ales will be required though....

Drat! Now let's see, how do I handle this?

I'll have to open The Tavern in Firefox to be able to do as you suggest. Currently, it's in Google Chrome, which doesn't allow links no way, no how! (And that's the main reason for the second time I was banned from this website.) Give me a few minutes to set this up.

But I'm pretty certain there is also a teleporter back to NS from the Shrine... I just dont recall where exactly it is lol
As long as you're in Dragonsand though, the trick is not to go TB... you'll get eaten instantly, in RT, you have a chance to dodge their attacks

There is. ***SPOILERS***

    Peter2 writes:

The teleport from NS to Dragonsand drops you a few yards west of the tunnel through the Shrine of the Golds. The teleported back to NS is on the east wall of the Shrine a few metres north of the tunnel entrance on the eastern side. But there are still too many dragons around on that side of the Shrine to make that an easy task.

It's a lot easier to get to about level 10 before you go anywhere near the Shrine. If you're at level about 10, you can get to the entrance to the NWC without being burnt to a crisp by the dragons behind you, and if you take the precaution to hire a Gatemaster before you start out on this, you do without using the teleporter back to NS. You can get money from the chest just opposite JvC's room to pay yourself back for what you spent hiring the Gatemaster.

And I also recall that the money chest only gives you up to 10k... but if you go back and donate that money to teachers, shopkeepers or a banker, you can go back and get some more.
IIRC the absolute limit is a little higher than just 10k, not that it'll get you rich, but there is a little more

Yes. The money comes . . .

. . . in tranches of 500 gp, and my experience is that the chest will give you that amount if you have less that 10,000 gp on you. I once banked everything to leave carrying 0 gp, and the chest gave me 10,000 gp and then stopped. I've not tried this experiment exactly, but I reckon that if your party had 9,999 gp with it, the chest would make that up to 10,499 gp.
