Still wary of the Dark Side
07/31/2019, 12:12:32

    The Elf Herself writes:

My stout adventurers are now level 39, and I'm still not seeing how Shrapmetal is better than old-fashioned magic bows, the more destructive element spells, or whatnot. Of course, at level 39, my spell casters are "only" expert at Dark magic. We're not strong enough to venture into the area where mastery is taught! (Yesterday we tried to take on Darkmoor--it was like an old silent movie comedy! Skeletons? Piece of cake! Evil spirits? Veterans? No problem-o! Eyes--oops! After having my nether regions repeatedly handed back to me on a platter, we had just enough spell power left to get back to New Sorpigal!)

Another argument against the Dark: apparently, having and practicing Dark magic, you can never get back to Angelic status--or at least, that's how it seemed. I was basking in all those free, powerful perks that Ragwort mentioned re: temple donations, when wham! Back to "Respectable!" Okay, so at least my righteous Archpriest can cast Day of the Gods and Hour of Power. But Shrapmetal? There're not enough blue potions in all of Enroth (or are we in Erathia in 6? I can never remember,) to keep my magic-users in spell power. And drawing a bow doesn't use any points. . . .

(Sigh) Maybe, as G.P. says, I just need patience. Okay, gods, please grant me patience, and I want it NOW!

Sudden weakness sounds like (spoiler)....

Haste spell expiring. Haste spell has shorter duration than rest of enchantments provided by Hour of Power. Right Hold on character portrait and spell bar to see spell times remaining. You now know why you master Dark Magic and claim negative reputation quests then Donate back to Respectable before claiming positive reputation quests. I believe that over time reputation decays back to average/respectable from negative or positive levels.

I like to restrict bows to the archer and Knight and have the other classes use the cheaper spells for range barrages, it makes the master level free cast spells more fun to have since they are pointless when the base bow is more even better in every way.

Expensive

Oh yeah... I recall how expensive Shrapmetal would be, mana wise... I believe Blackshire had quite a nasty indoor surprise for me that I eventually managed to sort, but afterwards I did need to refill SP (and some HP) at the temple...

Similarly, I quite disliked how "expensive" the control center was, when mostly relying on Dark Magic for damage.

Shrapmetal – close up and personal
08/02/2019, 12:30:25

If you get your party with its mirrored path magic casters tooled up with Guinevere and a Ring of Dark Magic each (you might have to transfer the Guineveres between the members of the party), and raise their skills in Dark Magic to 24, you will find Shrapmetal unbelievably effective if you use it properly. The way to do this is to get right close in – contact range – before you cast the spell. Doing that, I once succeeded in taking down a completely undamaged gold dragon with only three casts of the spell. There it was, a motionless black lump, all ready to be multilooted *evil grin*

Sounds easier said than done! So what I have to do is somehow survive (and grow) until I can do it! (I've already learned that it isn't wise to take on Fire Archers at level 9. Slow and steady, and patience, patience, patience--like G.P. suggests. (My personal philosophy, continually borne out by experience--and which I nearly always forget--is that a lack of patience is really a lack of faith: the false idea that if I don't do something rash, things will never change.)

So the usual (i. e. the one that I used in the one of my two finished games where I was able to pick up Light/Dark) process would be to first be the good guy/gal and just amass the positive reputation from all the quests, then get the master light promotion, then commit some atrocities (sell human bones, wreck the Mire of the Damned with some Armageddons (I love that feeling!), use the Baa head in the superior Baa temple, etc. etc.), get your master dark promotion, and then pretty much ignore the reputation until the end of the game.

Selling human bones?!

    The Elf Herself writes:

No wonder my rep sank so low! Being constantly in need of ready cash, I've been picking up and selling every cannibal bone I've run across. In 20/20 hindsight, I should have figured out that selling them wouldn't set well with the powers of good. (If I find any more, I'll save them for after I've progressed in the Dark.)

The saintly route to a notorious reputation ***spoiler***
08/04/2019, 12:47:45

    Peter2 writes:

OK, you've got your rep to Saintly and you've become a master in Light Magic. If you want to drop your rep to Notorious without slaughtering oodles of peasants, this is the way to do it.

First, donate a few times at a Temple of Baa. This will rapidly drop your rep to at most Average.

Next, sell all the bones you've been collecting. If you've given the game enough time for Bootleg Bay to have respawned and collected the bones from both spawnings, plus killing Longfang Witherhide and scavenging the bones from his lair, your rep should be well on the way down.

Following that, ask Wilbur Humphrey why Slicker Silvertongue won't let you access the Oracle, get the quest from him to do the Superior Temple of Baa, and finish touching the sequence of Baa Heads in there.

This should be enough to give you a Notorious rep, but if you need more, go and get healing from the Curator in Castle Kriegspire.

Don't do any of the "good" quests while you're doing these.

I found out (the hard way, of course). . .

    The Elf Herself writes:

. . .that merely healing at any Baa temple will lower your rep instantly. (This was outside Corlagon's Estate, and I was desperate! [No Lloyd's or Town Portal then.])

I also found out at another time, via an NPC passerby, that my rep was bad. I never did figure out why--I was only at level 1 and had never accidentally shot a villager.

So having given old "Potbelly" his blasted candelabra, and fixing prices for Loretta "Fleece"(necessary to finish the game, IIRC,) I can now never rise above Angelic, for Master Light level for my Cleric? Sheesh! I just hate the prospect of restarting yet again. (Especially since they just reached level 47.) I guess the trick thing to do if you just gotta have Day of the Gods and Hour of Power, is to get your lone Light player up to master before doing all those negative things.

Required Quests (spoiler)...

Following are quests required to complete game:

    0rep 3000xp 1000gld Show Sulman's Letter to Andover Potbello Andover Potbello, NS-Inn
0 3000 5000 Bring Sulman's Letter to Regent Wilbur Humphrey
    -200 25000 5000 Fix Stable Prices, 9 Stables Vote, Loretta Fleise-Druid, SC
    200 40000 5000 Kilburn's Shield, BS Vote, Wilbur Humphrey-Paladin, IF
    200 50000 0 End Winter, KS-Hermit Vote, Eric Von Stromgard-Archer, FN
    200 40000 0 Devil's Outpost, KS-Scroll Vote, Osric Temper-Knight, FH
200 25000 5000 Capture Prince of Thieves, Complex Vote, Anthony Stone-Cleric, FN
    200 50000 0 Hourglass of Time, xx-Key,NS-GF Vote, Albert Newton-Sorceror, MI
    0 0 0 Silvertongue's Cure, KS-Superior Temple Baa Wilbur Humphrey-Paladin, IF
    800 0 0 Silvertongue's Treason, FH-High Council Wilbur Humphrey-Paladin, IF
0 100000 0 Memory Crystal Alpha, HI-Supreme Temple Baa Oracle, FH
0 100000 0 Memory Crystal Beta, EIW-Castle Alamos Oracle, FH
0 100000 0 Memory Crystal Delta, MD-Castle Darkmoor Oracle, FH
0 100000 0 Memory Crystal Epsilon, KS-Castle Kriegspire Oracle, FH
0 500000 0 Control Cube, DS-Tomb of Varn Oracle, FH
    0 0 0 Third Eye, IF-Well Prince Nicholas, IF
    -928 50000 0 Magic from Archibald, IF-Library Oracle, FH
    0 0 0 Save Enroth, SW-Hive Seer

Since you can donate up to Respectable(+200rep) at any time there are ways to reach Saintly(+1000rep). Spreadsheet shows that REQYUIRED +/- quests add up to +672 but if you do Loretta's -200 first then pay off monks to +200 you'd have +1072 which is Saintly at end. IF there is game time decay to Average then maybe not. But Ribannah completed game in five game time days.

ALL (not just above) +/- quests add up to +1246rep. If Andover"s -200 and Loretta's -200 were done first then bribe Temple to +200 you'd have +1846. I doubt optional Baa Follower -976 could be done at beginning but if so you'd end up w/ +2822rep.

Since you can achieve Dark Mastery on 2Jan and purchase absolution back to +200 one can finish Saintly. Greate Pier the Worse would obviously find this highly distasteful. Nothing an Armageddon, possibly two just to be safe couldn't fix.
