I guess you probably already know that, but I found something peculiar...

I'm pretty sure that you can also dual-wield hand blasters, which is lethal in real-time combat.

That would be awesome, but in my game it is not possible.

I don't think that the patches resolve any compatibility issues.

But they do fix bugs (like the broken doors or all sorts of recovery bugs) and add more optional capabilities (like MP3 music, a button to toggle double speed, or even remapping controls and mouselook). By the way, I'm quite wondering why do you still stick with vanilla. Having the bugs fixed seems to be a good thing, doesn't it?

Anyway, this reminds me of that custom Linux distro for playing all those old games that I wanted to make ....

. . . I enjoy being able from time to time to use the "features" of the v1.0 game. For example, to arm a sorcerer with a sword, or to enable a druid to learn Dark magic *evil grin*. Both are possible without using an editor if you know how to go about it. You just have to be careful to avoid the bugs. For example, the first thing I do when I enter Gharik's Lab (after clearing the hostile spellcasters and elementals out of it, of course) is to set a Lloyd's Beacon in it. The patches cleared those up as well.

I did play the patched game once, but I found that on my setup, the "Always Run" ability did not enable the party to move as fast as holding down the Shift key in the v1.0 game.

I'll have a try at it. The old machine still runs, after a fashion, but it's failing and is now very very slow. I've rescued some of my old DOS games by dumping the files to a memory stick and then copying them to my newer machine, but I didn't realise I could do that with games that I had to install.

Until I retired recently, I used my computer primarily for business, and I didn't dare play around with it because if I screwed the machine up, I was dead, metaphorically speaking.

Yes, you certainly don't have to install.

Most of these games have a very trivial setup which most commonly just unpacks game files from an archive and puts them where you tell it. Maybe it also sets some keys in the registry, but the game will very often happily recreate them if they are not found. (These are often used for saving the settings like loudness of music etc.)

Have you confirmed this to be successful with Win10?

The copy protection is a massive issue if the original game files you are copying came from a CD. In Win7, there was an update that broke older games with copy protection, but at least you could uninstall the update. However in Win10, this is baked into the OS.

Some people have reported success with various permutations of compatability/no-CD exes/other settings, but for others (like me), Win10 flat-out refuses to play games with copy protection. I was forced to re-purchase the GOG version of Wizardry 8, for instance, because my CD version sinply refused to work on Win10. Not simply copying the files, not a fresh installation on a fresh machine, nothing. And even this didn't work first time, I also had to download a specific "fix the GOG version of Wizardry 8 for Windows 10" programme. I have no idea what this did, but it eventually worked.

I haven't yet tried the MM games on Win 10 (or at least, those with copy protection MM6-9 - I assume the earlier DOS-based versions will work within DOSBox). But I'm expecting similar problems.

. . . MM3–5 from the Limited Edition of MM6 with 90+% compatibility, but not 100% compatibility. In MM3, completion of the Greek Brothers quest did not register, and in World of Xeen (MM4/MM5) one of the chairs (the chair for the rogue/ninja) in the northern Sphinx did not behave as it should. But both games are eminently playable.

I just refer to whatever was working back in the day when I still was using Windows (>= 6 years).

Then I came over to Linux, where there is Wine, and that can run the games magnificiently. (Often better than Win themselves! I still remember playing Heroes II with my brother, me on Linux, him on Win. His game crashed each 10 minutes. Then I lent him my other Linux computer and we were gaming all day uninterrupted. (And with additional screencast that I hacked up in bash ))

Once upon a time, I had plans for making a live Linux distribution for old games. There is even thread on these boards in which it is discussed, but it... hm... let's say it became one of those projects you never finish . However if the situation is so dire, then it will maybe prod me enough to do it in the next few months

......that would be fantastic! Win10 finally seems to be the step too far in backwards compatability for early Windows games, especially those with CD copy protection. I didn't want it, I'm sorry I have it, but my old PC had an issue that just couldn't be identified, and it seemed silly to reload an old OS onto a completely new machine.

I'm sorry I didn't do precisely that. Nothing made before Win7 works on Win10 (excluding "enhanced editions" & the like remade specifically for Win7+). Or on my version at least, which is pretty much out of the box with standard settings. I read some who have success with compatability settings, but not me. Seems to be luck of the draw with compatability of specific GPUs etc

It's pretty sad that Win10 ended that way. I thought it was much, much better on with the backwards compatibility than it really is, as I see it now.

(Well, if you clear all the hostile spellcasters and elementals, then you don't have any need to return, do you? )

Anyway, I set up a beacon in there nevertheless because those spellcasters are just ... insane. I just finished the game with a SSCC party, so I had quite a strong healing, and a healer NPC on the top, but I still had to portal to the temple once in a while. Especially the warlocks with their 400 HP and very powerful (16d4) energy attacks can decimate your party really fast.
