GOG has all 9 M&M games for $6.96. Says includes World of Xeen. Looks like for next 7 days.

Question about replacing the computer

If I get these games as a download rather than on disk, can any of you tell me how to transfer the games from my old one to my new one when I replace my computer?

I've no plan to do this in the near future, but I'd just like to know.

Do you mean the save files or the entire game(s)? Does your old computer have USB port(s)?

Transfering files

Each game is on one setup file, easily copied to whichever media (I save mine on a USB key (as an example, MM6 is 520 001 kb).

Doesn't it have to be installed?

No. My experiance is that once game has been installed, full game can be copied to any new folder or computer. May have to run as ADMIN in newer Windows OS. Can have multiple copies of same game on same computer.

Correct. Once the files are on the hard drive, the game plays

"Installing" simply unpacks the files in the correct "order" (subdirectories/etc). I've simply copy-pasted MM6-8 (as well as Wizardry 8) in entirety to a new hard drive and they loaded fine. If you're changing OS, you may need to change compatibility /admin mode etc.

Never tried this with MM9 or X, because they were significantly newer with different engines. But Wiz8 was from 2001, only a year before MM9

Technically, "installing" also may (or may not) put something into the registry.

But that seldom makes any difference, since the game will be most often happy to create the appropriate keys itself if it doesn't find them. The worst thing that can happen is that you'll lose your game settings (like sound and music volume etc.) (since these are the things that are most often shoved into the registry).

With other programs, you may lose other things this way (for instance, the menu you get after right-clicking a file or directory is controlled from within the registry. Some programs like WinRAR will put shortcuts in there, so you can just right-click a folder and then click "Pack to RAR".), but I think I've never met a program that would refuse to run if it doesn't have its registry keys in the place.

(Note that, however, the setup programs check for the registry keys, so they will think that the game is still "uninstalled". Which may cause some mess when you want to uninstall or reinstall the game .)
