Searching for a dream treasure... 12/29/2016, 06:39:33
|
Sudo writes:
I had a dream tonight, where I clicked an anomalous buoy right next to the most anomalous terrain formation in the game: the "spike" next to Castle Ironfist. And what happened was that it started raining Meteor Showers and Starbursts on the "spike", reducing it to a crater. And in the crater appeared a lot of gems and a chest. And so I went to the web at first, even though I was pretty sure I have never heard of such a thing. But what do I find? I find that there is a scroll of Meteor Shower in an unnamed tree north of The Temple of Baa!
So I've been trying to click all the buoys and cast Meteor Shower all around... still no treasure... But it would be so amazing to find a new easter egg after such a long time. It was just a dream, but there is also an extremely well-hidden secret in the Monolit, where you have to click the rocks in the first room 10 times back and forth, to get a small treasure (a shield, boots and a book). Well, thought it was interesting to share. And who knows, I might find something, hehe.

I hesitate to dampen your dreams, but MM6-8 weren't made with terrain or 'world objects' that could react that way. Great idea, though.

The thing is... 12/30/2016, 12:40:57

Sudo writes:
It's a truly anomalous piece of terrain: when you try climbing it, you can see the flat terrain under it.It's really a strange level design decision... it doesn't look good. It's like something put in to test the engine, but was left there mysteriously.
I can't find any discussions about this weird "spike" on the net either. But I know for sure, that if I would create an epic easter egg, I'd make some kind of puzzle around something you barely notice -- yet something where your subconscious feels that it's strange, yet your conscious mind thinks nothing of it.
The spike is a perfect example of that.

. . . I used a hex editor to read MM6's resource files. I remember finding a sword that I'd never seen in any of the games, but when I restored it in a throwaway game, it was only a +2 – I suspect it had been used in game development. I don't remember finding anything else of note.

Buoys in MM6 (KIND OF spoilerish) 01/05/2017, 08:02:13

Eric B writes:
You are kind of correct about something happening when clicking on a buoy. Only, the one I'm thinking of is in New Sorpigal. Go to the peasants' camp that's kind of NNE of the Abandoned Temple, and NNW of town. Get as close to it as you can; face the Volcano, and click on the Buoy. That's really the only one I know of that actually does anything. On a related note, I've found that items that do something (Hidden treasure, whatever) are either captioned when you hover the cursor over them with Capital Letters (Or not at all,) while ones that are just part of the scenery are captioned with all lower-case letters. Such as "torch" and "Torch" or "tree" and "Tree" .

If there's something peculiar about a rock, or a tree, or something, usually the name is capitalised or absent. The now-defunct site that used to be run by Tennessee Ernie Ford had a pretty complete list of them. The ones you tend not to find are those buried in the walls of buildings – try clicking on the south wall of the Bank in New Sorpigal, for example

Remember all those trees and rocks in--was it 7 or 8 or both?
One of the "heroes" guarding the tomb in 8 had also written a list of co-ordinates for the various treasures. Can't remember if it was Flamestryke or somebody else. I don't know if I still have the list, but I'll look for it. (Would you believe the Papa Elf and I are both pack rats in real life, too?)

I can't remember all of them, but there was a tree on the south riverbank in Ravenshore, a rock south of the Lava Lake in Ironsand, the back wall of the ogre fort in Alvar, a marker post in Shadowspire (for which the beneficiary needed expert repair, IIRC), a buoy in the mid-west of Ravenshore, a rock in the open space in the SW of Alvar town, and others.I have distinct pack-rat tendencies myself, but I keep it under fair control most of the time

Yes, it is indeed an easter egg -- though not like that. 02/08/2017, 16:27:19

It's the New World Computing *sword through the earth* from the logo!
It's simply a sword blade! how can I have been so blind!I was searching for treasures and triggers all over Castle Ironfist, yet it was right in front of me. Though it's just a subtle easter egg, I'm glad that it finally makes sense.
As it really is a strange formation. Do take a look at it yourself! If only it had a metal texture, it would totally stand out as a sword blade! Oh, and also I was wrong about it being a stand-alone object, by seeing flat grass terrain under it. But I have looked through other steep hills to see that there is a general ground-level of grass everywhere... which is strange, but there it is.
