Can`t install MM6 in Windows 10
08/02/2016, 01:10:40

    Corak writes:

I had MM6 running under Win 7. I upgraded to Win 10. I have been playing BDJ`s mod. Still worked fine after the upgrade. I decided to play the original MM6 so I uninstalled it and tried to install from the original CD.

I click autorun and the launch screen comes on. I then click install and nothing happens. The launch screen eventually disappears and then nothing.

    I've tried:

    Set compatibility to XP SP3.
    Run as admin
    Downloaded latest NVidia drivers
I am logged in as admin (checked using cmd)

I've run out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

I've no direct experience with this, but...

... it sounds like something else needs to be set to compatibility mode. I think you've done that to _setup\SETUP.EXE. Do that to _setup\LAUNCHER.EXE and Autorun\Autorun.exe also.

Having suggested that, though, I'm not sure it would make a difference. I popped in my MM6 install disk on my Win7 system, set the compatibility mode of SETUP, and then selected 'Test compatibility' from the context menu. It failed. Perhaps one needs to copy the install CD to a hard drive I'm out of clues now.

No luck

Nice try, Bones, but no cigar. It made sense to me to copy all the files to the hard drive before setting compatibility, so I did. But no difference. The troubleshooter said the programs were incompatible but also said it had fixed them.

Only other thing, I look at task manager and each time I tried to run setup it launched the 32 bit windows launcher. seems to me MM6 must be a 16 bit program. Perhaps that's the problem.

    Anyway, thanks for your help.

That upgrade has been distributed free for Win 8 owners
    until 29th July .
I expected lot of probs but it went smooth .
All files including games were left .The only media like programs for photoes and music been changed though photoes were left intact .
Might and Magic 6 and 7 work ,they both have BDJ's mods .
    Eight also works.
The only problem is screen is too narrow I have 2 black stripes
on left and right . The attempt to fix it failed .

I think you can't get rid of the black stripes.

The game runs in a fixed 4:3 resolution, I think 800×600. If you have a screen of different aspect ratio, like 16:9, you won't be able to fit 4:3 into it without distortion.

re mm6 win 10

I wish I could remember how it went for me, but I am running mm6/7/9 on Win10.

I have several versions and over the years some wold not install. The Millennium edition is the one that has worked on Win8 and 10 for me.

Try opening the CD as a file. Then use the setup exe and run as admin. If you do get it installed apply Greyface patches and it should work fine.

Since I couldn't run MM6 I decided to play Civ III and ran into the same problem. So I went to the CIV forum and found this. It worked for CIV III so I tried it on MM6 and I was able to install it and run it.

This seems to be the key for many old games on Windows 10.Hope this helps us old timers reminisce.

MM6 install

I've found that if you install the old games on an older OS, XP, Vista, MM7, that you can then copy the ENTIRE folder of the game to a flashdrive and Paste into the Win10 PC. Of course this means that the game won't show up in the Registry and there would be no way to uninstall it from the Control Panel.

Once the game is on the Win10 PC, then you may need to tweak the Executables for compatibility issues. Also, some old games have virtually no graphics resolution choices. YMMV. Good luch.

Try installing the game in a new sub folder in the root. I created a folder in C:/ called GAME and all is good.
