Returning to Might and Magic
06/02/2016, 11:43:49

    Hobbun writes:

Hi all, I’m another returner to Might and Magic! I actually am going through HoMM3 right now, but also debating on starting up MM6, as well. One of my all time favorite RPGs.

But it’s been so long since I’ve been here, I am not sure what would be the best patches for the game. I know I am going to need to download it from GOG most likely, as I have Windows 7 now. My HoMM3 Complete disc did ‘not’ work after I installed, but the $10 version I bought through GOG works beautifully. And also downloaded the HD Mod+ patch, as well as HotA mod.

But as for MM6, after I repurchase on GOG, what do I need to download patch-wise to make the experience run better and enjoyable. I have heard of a Mok’s patch or Grayface’s patch, but not sure what is current or what I should download. I figured coming here I would be pointed in the right direction.

    Good to be here again!

Bones is the expert, but I'm pretty sure that the first step is that . . .

. . . you need to make sure that your game is fully updated to v1.2, and then apply either Mok's patch, or Grayface's. I've not played games with Grayface's patch, but as I understand it, Mok's patch just enables you to play the vanilla game smoothly, whereas Grayface's changes the game in a few places –I don't know where. Mok's patch was, however, originally designed to enable the games to be played with WinXP as the operating system, so you might need to fiddle with the compatibility settings as well.

Try it and see, and if it doesn't work then get back to us.

    Good luck!

Grayface's patch fixes a few broken mechanics ...

for example the recovery time bugs, as described by Bones in the link, or the famous bug which makes expert / master ranks of Plate reduce penalties for Chain; Chain, for Leather; Leather, for Shield.

And on top of it, it adds some goodies, like being able to play the music from MP3s instead of CD, implementing quick save / quick load, full-time running (so you don't need to hold SHIFT all the time if you want to run) and a switch between normal game speed and two times the normal speed.

By the way, maybe those patches will be already present in the GoG version.

That's the nice thing about GoG games --- they come already patched and configured to run as best as possible.

(On the dark side, it seems that they tend to just incorporate the fan-made patches from all over the Net --- without asking the authors if they can use their work. If I remember, Bones recently found out that the TELP patch for MM9 was just silently used by GoG ... ?)

Ok, so does anyone know which patches the GoG MM6 download incorporates?

Sorry, I don't.

But you may check for it like this: fire up the game, open the character screen (the one which lists all the detailed stats for a single character) and right-click the experience or the attack and shoot bonus fields.

If the Grayface's patch is installed, you will see which level are you eligible to train to and how many XP are remaining to the next one (if you clicked the XP field), or the recovery times (if you clicked the attack or shoot bonus field).

If it's not installed, you won't see any of these. Please note thta this is only from the top of my memory, so it'd be worth checking both options.

Finally, if the Grayface's patch is truly installed, you needn't worry about any other patches, because that patch actually contains all other patches made for MM6 (i. e. Mok's).

(OK, so the XP details are probably shown in the unpatched game as well, but the recovery times and the F2 key will still decide it.)

(And/or just hit the key "F2" while inside the game. If everything starts to go at double speed, then Grayface patch is installed. If not, then it isn't.)

I actually went ahead and installed Grayface's patch.

And I can tell it is his patch as the auto-run (without holding down the Shift key) is on.

Yep, double-checked and it's installed

    Hobbun writes:

I know I actually installed, but I guess you could say it worked.

But hitting F2 causes double speed.

Also, I think that is pretty awesome that the armor and timing bugs were fixed. From my understanding, those were problems for quite awhile. I do remember reading Bones write up on it awhile back (what you linked).

    Thanks for your help.

Of course, that was a good way to go as well.

And it fixes some problems in the game as well,

like the famous problem with the key to the Gharik's forge. Likewise, if I remember correctly, there were problems in the Shadow Guild building in Frozen Highlands (I don't know how exactly is it called and there are multiple Shadow Guild dungeons) --- something like door that won't open even if it should, perhaps --- and that was corrected too.

File corruption problem?
06/03/2016, 14:02:46

    Hobbun writes:

I was just re-reading Bones write-up in regards to the recovery time and armor bugs (and are now fixed with Grayface's 2.0).

But I noticed there was a comment made that NWC years back that they would not fix the time recover and armor bugs without fixing the file corruption issue.

    Has this been fixed?

No music?
06/03/2016, 19:55:30

    Hobbun writes:

Started playing MM6 tonight for awhile, and realized one issue, there is no music.

No music at the title screen and no music during gameplay. Sound effects and voices are present, but no music is playing.

I looked under "Game Options" and the only thing associated with the music is the volume.

How do I turn on the music?

All fixed

    Hobbun writes:

Apparently GoG put all the music files in the "Sounds" folder. So created a "Music" folder and moved them into it.

Then changed PlayMP3=0 to "1" and presto, works just fine now.
