And bzip2 compresses just one file. But in combination with tar, it is very good.

The main reason I like it so much is because it's one of the veeeeery few formats that can store Linux permissions, mtime, ctime and atime ... and all that stuff. With the rest, you can be glad if it stores date of creation.
