It's certainly true in MM3. One example that stands out a mile is when your party meets monsters called Bugaboos. If there's a sorcerer in your party, they will ignore every other character and hammer relentlessly on him — so much so that you are well advised never to go near them until your sorcerer can cast a spell called Power Shield, and is sufficiently advanced to cast a reasonably strong one.
